According to a recent study, the use of social networks by those under 13 is in sharp decline in France

The issue of young people's presence on the Internet continues to raise concerns, due to the easy accessibility of inappropriate content and the harmful effects of social media. A digital majority was introduced to prevent those under 15 from registering without parental authorization. However, this new study from Heaven suggests that young people are moving away from social media platforms on their own.

The population studied significantly reduced their use of large platforms compared to the previous year. In 2022, 87% of children aged 11 to 12 were active on social networks, compared to only 71% in 2023, a drop of 16 points in one year. This decrease would be attributable to a growing awareness of parents and the efforts of social networks to restrict access to young people.

It is interesting to note that 80% of children aged 11 and 12 are now equipped with smartphones, compared to 85% in 2022. In addition, 27% of them believe they spend too much time on social networks.

TikTok recorded the biggest drop in usage in this age group, with a drop of 21% in one year, followed closely by Snapchat which saw a decline of 20%. On the other hand, YouTube remains the most popular platform with this demographic, with a penetration rate of 60.5%. WhatsApp is in second place, with a penetration rate of 43%.
